I am considering going back to college for a Masters degree in mathematics, and then teaching math in a community college. How hard is it to get a full-time position in math at a community college? Can anyone point me to some serious research? I'm told by some (guidance counselors, profs with tenure) that there is a shortgage of mathematics teachers but I have not seen any actual data to back up this claim. I'm told by others (unemployed or underemployed liberal arts majors) that it is impossible to get a full time teaching position at a community college.
I like math, but I don't want to go back to college and then find out it's impossible to get a job teaching math.
Thanks.
