This is a stupid question, but what is the difference between Gaby and Gabby? I thought they were pronounced the same way...are they the same or not?

I agree with Chris re pronunciation, but you have to keep in mind that there are a lot of twits out there who can't spell properly. Moral? - ask, and don't assume, as whoever chose the name may think it is pronounced differently.

Gaby= Gay bee and Gabby= Gab bee. The a in the first name is a long a because it is an open syllable, and it has a vowel blend
(ay)that is pronounced as in the word day.
The second name has a double consonant so you make it into two syllables by splitting at the double consonant. This makes the first syllable a closed one which makes the vowel carry the short sound as in words like apple.

i thought Gaby and Gabby was the same too.

I would have thought they were pronounced the same, Gab-bee, even though they look as if they shouldn't. (I knew a Gab-bee, but spelt Gaby, as it's short for Gabrielle)
