The links I'm giving you are specifically about American shorthairs (tabbies and such), but the first site, which is for the Cat Fancier's Association, has links to British shorthairs as well.
Most cats you see on a day to day basis are American shorthairs--mixes of various types of cats. These include tabbies (cats with dots and stripes on their fur), calicos (orange, black and white), tortishells (black and orange cats), and cats that look rather like Siamese but with softer features. There are other kinds too. They are usually healthy and you can get them for free--sometimes people give them away, or you can get one that already has its shots and has been fixed at the animal shelter or some pet stores (though there may be an adoption fee).
