In 1 week I am turning 16 and need a job to buy clothes, a car, gas for my car, pay some money for college, buy gifts for family and friends, and other things. Since I'm turning 16, I really need a job to pay for these things, but I don't want it to interfere with my school work. What are good ideas for a job that I can work, that will only be a couple hours after school and 1 day on the weekend? I know I can't be picky with my hours, but I also need to keep up my straight A's and I need to have time for all of my clubs in school. Also, fast food is definitley out of the question because I will absolutely not work there. I put an ad in the paper last week for babysitting and tutoring, but no one has called me. I can't continue to put ads in because they cost too much money which I do not have. Does anyone have any ideas for a job that will still leave me plenty of time to do my homework and other schoolwork, and still give me time to relax with my family and friends?

Check out a Home Depot or Lowes store, they teach a lot of basic skills that can come in useful later in life. Plus they have good insurance, ask your mom about that.

If you are serious about maintaining good grades so you can go to college, then you might have to rethink what you need money for. Those good grades CAN be worth money in the form of scholarships, so don't be content with just getting by, strive for more and graduate at the top of your class. Apply for every scholarship you can; that takes time. And be involved in school government and clubs. Be active in every aspect of school

You can only use so many clothes, and currently, with gasoline at $3.00+/gallon, you might want to rethink having your own car. You would be paying for the car, fuel, insurance, inspection, and upkeep. Buying gifts for friends and family is admirable, but gifts do not have to cost lots of money.

You might not need as much money as you first thought, but you do need to earn something. Newspaper ads may not be the best way to go about finding a job. Make flyers to distribute to your neighbors. Working retail can work even if you do not to work fast food.

So, school comes first, making money comes next, then helping around the house, and socializing is what you fit in when you're not busy with everything else.

Try the local paper and look at the want ads. You might want to also ask neighbors about babysitting, they may be more likely to hire you because they know you. Another idea might be the local movie theater or a local amusement park.

I started working at McDonalds a week after my 16th birthday. They were very flexible with my work schedule and you learn a lot working in fast food...how to work as a team, great customer service skills and how to work with many different types of people.

I would highly recommend it!!
