It's obvious very few who answered this question ever worked in food service or has the first clue about it!. I worked fast food for two years, and challenge any of you to wear plastic gloves in 100 degree heat. Besides, when you are working with very hot food, plastic gloves melt. Imagine trying to dump a just out of the fryer basket of fries with gloves on. Do you have any idea of the temperature of that hot oil, or what would happen if some splashed onto a plastic glove? Besides, the person wrapping the food does usually wear gloves, and people who work in fast food are trained in universal precautions. If you don't know what those are, look them up. As a fast food worker, I washed my hands constantly and also used an anti-microbial gel that is 3 x as strong as what you buy in the drugstore. It takes the skin right off your hands. To the asker: if the tone of this is a little caustic, it is not directed at you, but at the idiotic assumptions made by some of the answerers. And that, my dear is as sensible as it gets.

Most of the people who do work at fast food restaurants do wear gloves. Besides the occasional "forget", gloves are required in all fast food stablishments or cafeterias. If you are dealing with food that is being distributed to the public, sanitation is key.
In my case, when I used to work at McDonald's [my first job], everyone wore gloves. Food preparation didn't go on without the annoying "wash your hands" policy. The only people that didn't wear gloves were the cashiers, because they only dealt with the money, and NOT the food.
If there was someone working at the "Fry Station", he or she would stay there and avoid contact with anything else other than fries and their equipment to avoid cross contamination.
The people working the grill would do the same. One person (with gloves) would handle the meats, someone else would handle the toppings, and someone else would handle the wrapping...and this was all done in a clean environment.
If for any reason, someone was to leave their post or the premises, he or she would have to wash their hands and clean themselves before coming back to their assigned spots.
This was MY experience alone...I'm not saying all fast food places are clean or the same as mine, but this just goes to show you that not all "fast food people" are unsanatary.
BUT if for any reason you experience something other than "the good side of fast food" you should let someone know. It only makes it worse if you keep it to yourself. Your food will be contaminated and other people will suffer the same consequences as you.
You're the one paying for the services! Shouldn't you be getting your money's worth? Get the satisfaction of knowing your food was prepared with care...or if your expectations are not met, then I suggest you stop going to this apointed "fast food restaurant".

I would like to know that one, too. Why don't they have to wear hairnets, too? I have found hair in my food at restaurants and I almost upchuck. The sanitary system in restaurants has gone to pot. Maybe the gloves are too expensive to buy, or maybe the employees complain too much about having to wear them. I wish something could be done because you never know what you might be eating when you go to any restaurant. And whatever you do, don't make the cook mad!

When they aren't wearing the stinken annoying plastic gloves they're washing their hands with the stinken skin irritating soap!
Man I would get spots on my hands from skin irritation due to dehydration of the skin! I always washed my hands!
Oh and to--> Ally K
You're right, those stinken gloves melt!
I'd like to see some people wear gloves in the nasty heat standing next to an oven and taking a pizza out! Then watch out because if you get burned those stinken gloves melt onto your hands!
No its not the fault of the workers or management, but of the stinken inconvenience!

I work in fast food, I am doing it while i am in college. They don't ware gloves, because no one cares about gloves at 11PM. We want to get home and sleep. Plus the manager does not make the employees ware gloves all the time. I take the orders at drive-thru, so I never ware gloves. After you work in fast food, you will never eat it again. I pretty much hate all fast food. I find it to be low class, and low quality.

They don't have to. It's not required. And to prevent germs with gloves you would have to change your gloves every time you touched a new food item because gloves carry germs just as much as hands do...sometimes more because you don't wash your hands when you're wearing gloves.
Maybe instead of complaining about it you should make your own damn food!

Many states don't require wearing gloves while making sandwhiches. I work in a state that does require wearing gloves, and I have to tell you, after a while, they get hot.

In most states they do. I lived in columbus, ohio and they wore them and even when i lived in West bloomfield michigan the y did. Know I moved back to my hometown in Kentucky and most fast food restaurants do...Call your state office and see what your law is because it is gross when people prepare food and do not wear sanitary gloves.if ..i ever recieved any food that made me sick by a fast food restaurant ,i would report them to the health department. they should be safe and follow rules.

Actually I have seen some who do, but you're correct in that the vast majority do not. It seems to me that those working at the counters do not touch the food itself... the burgers, etc, are all wrapped in paper. As for the cooks, they are generally using spatulas for the burgers... but I have a feeling they use their hands to open the buns. It's hard to tell what they do behind the counter in the kitchen... maybe we're better off not knowing!

that's a good question, and the only reason i can think of is that the companies are cheep and won't pay for gloves. I would hate to think the people fixing my food are gross.
