Its because people want to belong to a group, fit in somewhere. We're social mamals. Dressing and acting "emo" is a way of showing everyone you beliefs just like wearing a Footballs teams jersery. Sad but natural. And the media want to keep it this way because its easier to satisfy a herd of similar people then make costum products for eveyone.

Sweetheart, life really will smooth out and not be so stereotypical. Young folks need the feeling of belonging, even if it's to the misfits or racists...and no one else can get in unless you look like this or talk like that or wear this or drive that. It causes such hurt and snobbiness! It's really funny... I was the 'different' one in high school and I really had a tough time of it. Years later I was pumping gas when a man came up to me who recognized me from high school. He acted like we were long lost cousins from Omaha. I was thunderstruck!! In school, this man had never once spoken to me. I wasn't sure he had even known I was alive back then, but he even remembered my full name! Time is the great leveler, honey. It'll not be important at ALL in ten years!

This is nothing new. It's human nature both to separate people for their differences, and to group them together at the same time with stereotypes. It's an unfortunate part of being human, but one that's hard to fight. Don't worry, you aren't the only one who's noticed.

Honey, this has been going on since Time began. I'm sure they had the same unfair system of judging people even back in caveman days. It won't stop until people get it through their heads that we are all perfection, we are all of equal worth, and none of that material crap that they have is going to matter at all when they're six feet under.

I'm not so certain that it's just today that this is occuring. I think that human culture has always been very difficult on anyone who is the least bit 'different'....

no way alot of ppl see that. i think the main reason is that people are afraid of the unknown and everything that is different from them, they lable as cutters druggies fatties etc. so they can feel powerful.

What do you mean, today? It's always been that way. But there's really nothing wrong with being, different- depending how different.

Prejudice has been common throughout history, but "news" is a late phenomenon.
