Then they refuse to recognize what everyone else calls football by calling it "soccer." That's like me making a sport that is unrelated to shooting a basket and calling it basketball.

Okay, dont be mad at the Americans. In the 1800s, communication was obviously not as much developed as it is now, so America was pretty much in the wild of their being a sport called football in Europe & South America. However they did have a sport also called football in the US. When the sport of british football was brought to America, there was a problem of the naming as they already had this football. So they decided to call it association football by reversing the British FA's name of "Football Association". The young people of those times then made up a word to call players of "association football" as they already had footballers for their home sport. They took it from the word 'association' and started calling the players 'soccers'. The name stuck and from this word, Americans decided to replace the long name of 'association football' with SOCCER.

American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe. Basically, we didn’t need to name it soccer because we already had football. And it isn’t necessary to dispute me, look it up.....

Football is the name given to a number of different, but related, team sports. The most popular of these worldwide is Association football, which also goes by the name of soccer. The English language word football is also applied to Rugby football (Rugby union and rugby league), North American football (American and Canadian), Australian rules football, and Gaelic football.

While it is widely believed that the word football originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, there is a rival explanation, which has it that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot.

from Wikipedia.

So why don't Europeans call soccer Association football? Huh?

Americans thought their own sport deserved it more, though it makes me wonder how much football/soccer players use their feet compared to American football players.

I guess they didn't "steal" the word, per se, since they're almost the only ones calling their sport "football".

Why do you care about something so trivial and stupid. It is simple really. If we had known that SOCCER was gonna be so popular we would call Football something else.
