Actually, they are referred to as Nigeriens. People from Nigeria are Nigerians.

And in most cases, colonial histories are never too hunky-dorey.

I feel that your question is posed in very unhelpful language. We are speaking English in this forum. The French word you are using does not have the same connotations in English. Can I also advise that you should use the spell checker and in other ways get your head around the way it is polite to address people. Many people think that the former colonial powers took advantage of their colonies to extract wealth from them and of course that would be true; but those same powers gave very much back in return. The British gave India a civil service and most importantly a railway system; without these the country (the second largest population in the world) could not work. The Dutch gave Indonesia it's infrastructure. In these terms "rape" does not work. It is worth pointing out that the U.S. is and remains a Colonial power.

American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands leap to mind.

To you: The word you think everyone would mistake "Niger" for is spelled with 2 g's.

And why do I get the impression you WANT someone to get the wrong idea from your question?

Amazing, isn't it, how some people read what they choose into what you ask?
From what I have read, the French have not been all that helpful to anyone.. even themselves.
