Before starting any excercise program during pregnancy, be sure to check with your doctor... ask him/her what type of workout they recommend for your particular situation.
I know that the best excercise while pregnant is taking long, calm walks (if you have a nearby park or nature reserve, all the better to make sure that you get plenty of oxygen and a relaxing experience). Swimming is also great excercise since it doesn´t put any strain on your back and is known to provide sensory stimulation to your baby (the temperature of the water, sounds, and the way your motion changes when you're swimming).
I know that if you've always done a great deal of excercise and are in great shape, you can do a modified, toned-down version of your usual routine, but you need to talk to your doctor about it. Do NOT start excercising like crazy when you're pregnant if you've never excercised before! You're only going to hurt yourself and your baby if you do this.
And if you're worried about getting back into shape after your baby is born, don't... the best method is to do what Mother Nature intended, and breast-feed your baby. Not only does it give your baby the best nutrition in the world, a wonderful nurturing and bonding experience, but it will help you lose weight and get back into shape in no time... just enjoy your pregnancy and this special time with your baby, in a blink of an eye the pregnancy will be over and it will be time to start enjoying your child!!

Sure, but you can't lie on your back after about 27 weeks or whenever that starts making you uncomfortable. Try sitting on an exercise ball whenever you can, the balancing act tones your abs some. If you can support yourself with your arms, you can hang and do leg raises. You can also do resistance crunches sitting up if there is a weight machine available. That is where you start sitting up and push a bar forwards while you crunch forwards. If you don't have a sitting crunch weight machine, you can tie one end of a stretchy exercise band to something sturdy and hold it with both hands behind the bottom of your neck. Then crunch forward against the resistance while you are sitting or standing. Whatever you are doing, if it hurts, stop. And as always, ask your doctor before you do anything!

There must be a ton of books on pregnancy workouts but i am not quite sure that you need to work out your abs while pregnant, or that it is even recommended, or that it will make much difference at this point.

Give it a rest already. Your abs will get the workout of your life in a few months. Safer to wait; just try to relax.
