The KEY to handling this is to first convert the mixed fraction 1 1/3 to an improper, and then do the multiplication.

To convert a mixed to improper, you simply multiply the whole number by the denominator, and then add the numerator. so 1 1/3 would become 4/3.

So now we have 4/3 x 5. To multiply, you simply multiply the two numerators together and put that over the product (multiplication) of the denominators.

Well the whole number 5 is the fraction 5/1, so we have 4/3 x 5/1, which gives us 20/3 as a fraction or roughly 6.67 as a decimal.

You're probably putting it in your calculator wrong (1 1/3 would be read 11/3's in a caclulator). 1 1/3 would be 4/3 so, 4/3 x 5 would be 20/3 or 6 2/3.
