It is probably fine, however, I would not make that mistake too many times or the brakes will wear enough to cause problems. Emergency brakes are connected to the rear pads or shoes and only the activation of the brakes are independent. Applying the brakes in your vehicle actuates the brakes by hydraulics and pulling the emergency brake actuates them manually. For more info go to; www.howstuffworks.com

The rear brakes are fine, the emergency brakes these days are totally independant from the regular brake system. Don't worry about it. It's not a good idea to use the emergency brake if the car is older. On a new car it's fine, but if you're like me and never use it, the cable gets gunked up and then someone sets the brake and it won't release unless you persuade it with a hammer. Good luck.

Dont even think about it, you did no damage at all. Why?
The hand brake uses the same brake pads as the foot brake, which you use a lot more than a mile at 20

If you only went a mile with the thing on don't sweat it. ; )
However, don't make it a habit because you are right, it can cause problems with your brakes. Someone is sure to respond with better information than I am giving you.
Try to think of it as a parking brake, that might help you remember to take it off before you start moving.

well, you need to put what type of car it is.
the e-brake system overrides the rear brakes be it disc or drum system.
some read disc systems have little mini drum brake shoes inside the rotor.
leaving it on for bit won't hurt anything, at worst it'd smell for a bit.
if your car has the brakes shoe inside the rotor, they should be fine for you, your car is new, however an older car the shoes might be worn down or cracked from the heat, as there is no way to dissipate the heat on them, they are sealed. they are also fragile and don't offer much lining.

I've done this a couple of times and it caused no problems. Once, I had picked up a friend's daughter from daycare, was getting on the highway, and couldn't figure out at first why my car was so sluggish. Then I saw I had the hand brake on and had one of those Homer Simpson DOH!! moments, lol.
I haven't had any problems since and my car passed inspection.

your brakes are still fine. but if you didnt feel the brake drag then your hand brake is probly out of adjustment. adjusting it is easy and can be done with simple hand tools on most cars.

Don't worry, your ok.
But if ya wanna be sure take it to a well known shop , like" brake check" and have them do a free brake inspection.
But be careful don't let them sale you anything.
And don't tell them what you did wrong , if theres a problem they'll see it.
But don't worry.

Nope. If you moved without much drag, you probably didn't have it on enough to do any damage. Take your time next time , go thru a regular check list before you take off , it will become habit in awhile. Not to worry !
