I think you do need to love him for who he is. There is a fine line between loving concern for health & trying to control the other person.

I would NOT tell him he needs to lose weight.

You could indirectly help him to lose weight:
- cook for him using healthier foods. Cook only enough for 2 people to eat, no 2nd or 3rd helpings
- refuse to go to fast food restaurants when he asks. Don't say why. Just nudge him towards better food choices.
- ask him to take walks with you a few nights a week. Or find some other sport or hobby you can do togther. Or join a gym together.
- do NOT buy any more junk food. If it's not in the house, he can't eat it.

Part of it may be a self esteem and/or depression issue, depending on why he's overeating. Try to be more supportive of him. Compliment him. Give sincere approval for the good things he does for himself, even if it's as little as good hairstyle.

The bottom line is that it's VERY hard for some people to lose weight, especially when they get out of their teen years and into adulthood. You can not pick at him over this. Either love all of him or realise he's not the man for you & move on. He may never be able to be thin & trim.

Being overwieght is definately related to his snoring. I am also overweight and I snored so bad that I woke up my kids. I was then diagnosed with sleep apnea. It is a condition that you have episodes when you stop breathing when you sleep. Here are some questions:
#1 is he tired during the day?
#2 does he sometimes fall asleep while watching t.v. or other activity?
#3 does he wake up frequently during the night?

If you answered yes to any of these questions convince him to get tested at a sleep study center. Sleep Apnea is linked to other serious health problems like: Heart Disease, stroke, heart attack, and even death. If he is diagnosed they will put him on a CPAP machine at night (Continuous Posatitive Air Pressure). This will help him sleep. If he has mild to moderate case they may even do the surgery, however if he is severe like me, then it is the machine. Also it has show that people that have sleep apnea that are overweight and loose weight can be cured of it.

If your boyfriend sounds like he is having trouble breathing during sleep, it sounds like he is very overweight, and also unhealthy. It is very easy to say, "Just tell him to exercise and lay off the Big Macs," but this isn't a manner of a few vanity pounds or trying to fit into a summer outfit. Many people who are very overweight have health disorders that promote obesity, or they eat excessively to mask psychological issues. Not very many people end up obese because they really just love food. Most are depressed, anxious, or neurotic, and losing the weight will not cure those problems. Your boyfriend needs to see his primary care physician to be evaluated before doing any sort of diet or exercise regimen. The doctor can be helpful in providing ways to get in shape without causing the body more harm. Also, it may be necessary for your boyfriend to talk to a psychiatrist about why he overeats (if this is the case).

Weight and snoring are very much related. He increases his chances of sleep apnea. Sleep Apnea relates to pauses and obstructions in your breathing patterns and has the potential for increased risk of heart problems. I'd recommend him to see a sleep specialist that will observe his sleeping habits during an overnight test. I've personally gone through this experience three times to determine if I was suffering from narcolepsy or sleeping apnea and, I have boarder line sleeping apnea.

Concerning his weight, the quality of sleep, caloric intake, hydration, and exercise will aid in weight loss. The sleep test will help diagnose how severe the condition is. Eating multiple times a day like five smaller portions rather than three larger portions will aid his metabolism. Hydration, if your urine isn't clear, you're not drinking enough. Exercise is more straight forward.

most overweight people snore loud, but you can start hanging out together in the gym. don't try to tell him he's overweight though, some people are really sensetive about it. You can also take long walks together, not giving him a chance to buy lots of food in the process. Make sure he drinks enough water and does a lot of activities, you can also take dancing lessons together if he likes to, dancing's fun and helps you lose lots of calories. Try to get him to play soccer with his friends (or any other sport he likes), go to the club to play/learn tennis together or something. But you know, even overweight people can be healthy (as long as their heart condition is good). i wish i had some better advice but sorry, this is all i can think of at the moment. Good Luck.

Being overweight is never healthy for anyone. If he snores extra loud and/or appears to have a hard time breathing it could be due to a number of "sleep disorder" issues. One being, Apnea. Two being, the weight of his own body compresses down on him and may cause slight obstructions. I would be most concerned with the apnea and advise him to discuss with his doctor who would most likely refer him to a sleep disorder clinic for a nights stay. They will "hook him up" to a cardiac monitor and EEG wires on his head and watch him sleep for the eve. It will record all his activities and they can determine if he is having Apnea. If that is the case, they would most likely prescribe a C-PAP machine to wear at night to bed that keeps the airway open by a fine mist of air that is being pushed into his mouth and nose to keep the airway clear and prevent him from apnea. As for what you can do is to support him and do as much of the cooking for him as possible keeping it low fat. Hope this helps and hope he will seek a doctor's attention for the snoring. Snoring is a sign of potential problems. Take care.

Start out small and each week add something new. But you can come up with a plan he knows nothing about. Start buying healthier foods and cooking it for him. Have a fun time of dancing everyday. After a week, start taking for small walks and add longer every week. Only have healthy snacks around. Like Apples and bananas. If he starts to loose weight then he might breath better. I hope this helps.

Because he is overweigt might be the reason for the heavy snoring. He should go to the doctor as sleep apnea is caused from overweight and the more pounds can cause breathing difficulties.Sleep apnea can be dangerous as this has to do with breathing while you are asleep. Please, ask him to go to a doctor and get help from him as this can be very scary for you and him.
Good Luck.

My uncle has exactly the same problem. And yes, being overweight and having trouble breathing at night are directly related.
If you don't want him progressing to a more dangerous form of this disorder he should get in shape not only for his health but for you as well :-)
Good Luck!!

Had the same issue with my husband... I do love him however he looks, but I want him to be healthy too. Approach him delicately, it is a tough subject. Tell him you love him as he is, but you are worried about his health. Suggest both of you go to the gym, and if you cook for him, only cook healthy stuff. Overall, be nice about it. My husband eventually lost most of the weight.. am very proud of him.
