I'd say the following artists were pioneers:
- The Sugarhill Gang (obviously, for bringing rap to the masses)
- Run DMC (redefined rap, especially with Aerosmith)
- Slick Rick (one of hip hop's greatest storytellers)
- LL Cool J (one of the first "pretty boy" rappers, got lots of girls interested in rap)
- Queen Latifah (one of the first ladies in hip hop)
- Public Enemy (one of the most popular rap groups that was very vocal about real world issues)
- DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (first rap group to win a Grammy)
- Dr. Dre (along with Snoop Dogg, helped to popularize and create the West Coast sound)
- A Tribe Called Quest (popularized the "jazz-infused" style of hip hop in the 90's)
...and that's all I can think of at the moment. I might be back later with more, but this should hold you over for now - lol.
