I got a huge tangle while trying to sew buttonholes near the bobbin. I cleared that out but now my machine won't keep a stitch. I re-threaded the machine and bobbin, put in a new needle, played with the tension a little...but nothing works. What do I need to do? What happened?

Get a soft brush, remove the bobbin and dust for broken threads. They don't always come up when you pull them.
Look under the bobbin carriage to find dust, lint, thread and get it out of there.
While getting knotted up the thread may have loosened the tension on the bobbin so put a bobbin in and pull gently to see if it comes off easily, if not loosen or tighten the screw on the bobbin case itself.
Oil the machine and clean it.
Never adjust tension while the needle is up.
Put it all the way down, turn it to 0 and then turn to the number you think it should be, then adjust returning the needle to the down position each time before turning the tension.

I'm not really sure. I used to have a problem with that. I had a really old hand-me-down machine and it kept tangling and not picking up stitches alternately. I know in this particular machine the bobbin had to go into a little case that then had to be inserted into the machine's bowels a just the right angle for it to pick up stitches. Eventually, I just got tired of it and took the machine apart, cleaned and oiled it really well when I put it back together. After the overhaul, it worked like a charm (usually). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hmm when my machine does that I either have to drop the bobbin out of the metal bobbin cradle and check for loose threads that I missed..they sometimes get locked up around the spindle
or
I turn the bobbin itself around..sometimes when the stitch looks funky and really loose its cause I put in the bobbin backwards.
Four quilts later and I still put that darn thing in the wrong way from time to time.

It has to be something with the bobbin or something in the bottom part of the machine.Mine was doing that.I kept checking and playing with everything with it it finally resolved it on it's own.I think I finally replaced the bobbin with another one.Good Luck!
