My mechanic says this is common on Isuzu Troopers from the '97 era. I had a terrible noise. Thought it was the water pump, but then realized the noise wasn't coming from there. Couldn't really localize the sound, but thought maybe the timing belt was coming apart or something.
And ideas?

the harmonic balencer may be bad if you got a loose crank pully then the pin or key is sheered thats the point of that is to keep the pully in place even when there is no bolt holding it on thats why in most cases you need a gear puller or harmonic balancer puller to remove the crank pully

A loose crankshaft pulley isn't unique to the Trooper, or to Isuzus, or, for that matter, to imported vehicles.
However, I'd imagine that the Trooper adds a whole new dimension to the mechanic's bill.

I've never worked on one but didn't Isuzu put the crankshaft thrust bearing behind the harmonic balancer? When the bolt loosens up the crank end play increases. Makes all kinds of weird noises.

Not the timing pulley but maybe the harmonic balancer came loose. Check the harmonic balancer pulley and make sure it is secure. Check your auto tensioner. If you can't find it on the outside, you'll want to take the timing cover off and look over it. The timing belt has an auto tensioner pulley as well. Good luck.

Loose crank shaft pulleys are common on troopers the key in crank wears allowing movement on pulley.

Definitely a ptoblem with these jeeps. Better to get it sorted soon before it causes any more damage that will end up costing you a hell of a lot more than just a pulley.

I would assume that your mechanic knows what hes talking about. Unless you are a new customer, then he might be crooked. Look for a mechanic message board and ask them, Im sure one exists. Good luck.

yes i have, if you want to check yourself, remove the belts and see. i am thinking that the harmonic balancer might be bad if i remember correctly. i used to work on them daily for the local news company

i have seen the problem before also on troopers also. best way to tell if they give a problem, call a few parts stores and see if they stock it.
