If you are like me it is because it takes you to a place that nothing else in the world can take you to, a place for self discovery about the truths that you believe fit into your worldview of life and reality.
If you haven't read Ouspensky's "Tertium Organum" you're really missing out on a wonderful piece of literature that ties together the aspects of philosophy, meta-physics, physics, spirituality, and all things wonderous in general.
You have to have a special mind to appreciate this stuff, hold fast to that my friend.

It where there are but all questions, and no answers. All we can learn in life is to be able to ask right questions in a right way, and philosophy teaches to do just that. You like philosophy because your mind has capacity to expand. You are passionate about philosophy because you wonder and think - who am I? And yet you seek no answers. You just want to ask the same question in numerous ever so more wondrous ways. I know in our thought is the time of the world - the future, the past and an ever evading present moment that passes so fleetingly that we hardly sense it. We are in this moment. You want to explore this moment as well, because that is where you yourself are. We try to hold on to life that swifts along. We want to - what this life is for us? And if this is all that we have then why it ends? People who are interested in answers go to other places of knowledge, but not you, you could not be content with some half truth.

La philosophie mon ami, cela vie!

Not everybody likes philosophy, so do not take your feelings for granted. A clue to the appeal of philosophy as a subject (rather than any one particular philosophy) is in the name itself: "philo-" is "I love" and "sophia" is "wisdom" in the Greek. It is the study of wisdom for its own sake -- for "love" of it!
Philosophy seeks to give workable definitions for concepts that are important to mankind: truth, life, death, insight, morality, joy, pain.. and many more. THe range of tactics used by philosophers ranges from the use of analogies (Plato) and aphorisms (Pascal) to scientific investigation (Newton) and even mathematics and orderliness (Wittgenstein). Philosophers came in all "flavours" and personalities, but they have one thing in common (except, possibly, the Postmodernist, who believes only in disassembly): they have something interesting to say which they believe can be of benefit to others. Some philosophy drips over into practical religious life -- especially some of the Eastern religions. Others are quite apart from religion and need not impose on any believer (Thoreau and Berkeley for example). True, some philosophers bring primarily doom and gloom (Hume), but others put joy into anything they touch (James). You are in GOOD COMPANY when you dip into philosophy. PS: you may like to try, after a while, to develop your own approach. In this you may impart the love of wisdom to the next generation.

Because it expands the boundaries of what you previously considered "reality" and allows for your mind to reach out to possibilities you never considered before.

Or maybe because the women at the local philosophy society are really hot ... 0:-)

Possibly because you realise that no matter how much you learn you will never know enough. There are way more questions than answers and the more answers you get the more questions they lead you to think of !

Aristotle would say that's what we are brought here for. To question the very nature of God so the chosen do in fact get chosen by being able to reason intelligently.

cause philosophy sharpens your power of reasoning and uses logic to come to a factual conclusion. for self affirmation that you are indeed intelligent. because you find it more interesting and applicable to daily life than algebra?

Because you have nothing more productive to do with your time beyond philosophising over "deep" questions that are insignificant such as "why are we here?" Who cares just live your life and save your inquiring mind for the truly vital questions such as "what is for dinner?"...
