A seance, which was started in the late 1800's, is a ceremony that is used to call upon the dead in order to speak with them. A group of people are seated in a circle, in a dark room, and it told what to do by a medium. The medium has the ability to call forth spirits and have them possess him/her. The medium draws energy from the people when calling forth a spirit. This results in contact with the dead, and also the possession of the medium. This is when the spirit of the dead person steps into the meduim's body and speaks.
This was started in the late 1800's, when families wanted to "speak" to their loved ones when they had died and "went beyond the grave." They also did this to find out if there was any hidden propety besides what was left for them in the will.
Later, seances became regarded as hoaxes because mediums were starting to fake certain aspects of the seance.

A seance is a ritual where (I'm assuming you're asking what happens) the 'medium' instructs the guests to close their eyes and clear their minds. They usually hold hands, which, I am told, was to prove no one was moving the table or had moved from the table. Then the medium may or may not actually receive messages from those who are dead. I have seen some strange things in my life, but truly, I have never seen that work. Eventually, the guests are able to ask questions and the medium speaks for whomever those assembled would like to reach.
