No, isn't that what an engagement is about? Not a licence to go full steam ahead with the wedding plans? Time to decide either yes, I can live with them, have children with them, or no, that's not something I can do?

I was really young when I saw it, but wasn't it a case of him wanting to do the right thing for the kids, and settled for someone who would annoy him the least? And then he meets someone who isn't going to adjust & play along, who'll get angry about the things that matter? I reckon a naval commander is going to admire someone with guts. And he did tell her he was marrying someone else! My ex was too much of a coward to do that!

As far as I remember, they then lost everything, because he had to agree to the Nazi ideas or not only lose his promotion, but be targeted. And they had to sneak out & borrow the fare to take a boat to the US. And started a camp there, went on tour, borrowed furniture, managed somehow, made new friends & learned English.

Well, I can't see his first choice doing that - she probably would have gone along with the occupying forces & kept the mansion, not lose her position in society.

No the captain was not bad! He fall in love with the babysitter because they have many things in common. They both love music. The captain's rendition of Edelweis is very good. The babysitter can play the guitar and her voice so good.!

According to the biography, the woman was a bit of a gold digger who wanted to name and status, but not the kids. Captain Von Trapp did what was best for the children, as well as his own heart. I believe Maria's only daughter only recently passed away. About ten years ago, the family home in California burned down, destroying everything they did manage to recover from Austria.

Well, he did get engaged to the woman and then broke the engagement.

His reasons were perfectly understandable and he made the right choice, but as far as the engagement situation stands he's still 'the bad guy'.

But hey, not breaking the engagement would have been even worse.
