i think the fiance (the baroness) only loved the captain for the money and wasn't really interested in his family, because she wanted to send the kids away....maybe she did love him, but when you marry someone, you should also think about the children....obviously, the captain loved Maria, and she loved the kids and would make a happy home for all of them....she was the perfect one for the captain...i don't think he was bad for choosing her over the baronness...

No, the heart wants what the heart wants and Maria brought out a side in him that he had not seen in a long time. Not sure if it happened in real life or if they just put that bit in the movie.
