the possibilities are too many, but the resolution is simple.
1. first unseat and reseat the cable connections to your optical drive properly.
2. upon startup, keep tapping the F2 key till you enter the system setup. In there there are two things to do :
(a): check the drives to see if the cd-rom drive for any reason is disabled. if it is enable it.
(b) press the following : ALT+E , ALT+F and then ALT+B. This would refresh your hardware settings and have your drive being detected.
Do also check that the power is going to your cd at startup. That you do by just lookin at it and you'd notice that the cd-rom drive light blinks a few times. if it doesn't do that, check your power coonections and that should resolve the issue.

Possibilities are either a cable(s) has come loose from the cd-drive.Or the cd-drive's firmware has failed,in which case it's time for a new drive. But I would first check to see if a cable has come loose, then restart the system and go into the bios setup screen and see if it detects the drive.

this has happened many times to me on different computers i have rebuilt. i would first run the add new hardware program in the control panel. check all connections especially jumpers and ide connectors to cd rom and motherborard and power supply. try changing power supply connector to cd rom. if all else fails, just put in your installation disk and reinstall windows. this is guaranteed to pick up the cdrom drivers. but first try to "add hardware" button in the control panel
