I have a cousin in his mid 30s. He attended a university in his early 20s and gained around 80 credits. But in his last semester he was expelled because his grades dropped under 2.0 gpa. So he just got a job and didn't go back.

He is interested in going back to school and getting his degree. Are his credits still valid and can he reapply at the same university? And does he have to take an entrance exam?

His credits are still valid and he can use them towards a degree. It's up to the college if they allow him in.

But if he wants to start fresh, in some states they allow it. They ignore all previous work as long as 10 years has passed in Texas.

Credits simply don't "expire." Programs change and so do specific classes required to complete these programs. This means that some of your friend's credits won't count towards a program, but might still be applicable as electives.

It all depends on the college/university itself. Some schools will require a re-test or exam for some coursework, or maybe taking new classes. Certainly, computer technology has changed in the last - well, two minutes. He should reapply and see what they say, but should also consider applying to other schools considering his track record at the first wasn't good when he left.

As for the entrance exam, there should not be one since he would be considered a re-enter or transfer student. ACT and SAT are only required for those who haven't been in school yet. One disclaimer: some specialty areas may require an interview, exam, or audition. Nothing is automatic. He needs to ask! Tell him good luck.

college credits don't expire... what happens is that he would need to get a new degree plan that is updated. ten years ago a forgen language was not required for graduation now it is in most schools. the same is true with a computer skills class. what he will have to do is talk to a counsolor and maby take some extra classes for graduation. and being that his GPA fell below 2.0 he may be on academic probation. however he should not have to start as a freshman all over again.

"100" level college classes are generally the freshman level classes; the classes you take your first year. They are very basic, and 15 credits is usually the number of credits taken in one semester. Classes are usually worth 3 credits each, although some are more and some are less. You can plan on taking roughly 5 college classes in order to meet the requirement.

Credits do expire often after around 10 years. Your cousin would have to check with the university to check their policy as to the length of the validity of the credits. Often, they expire because due to the fact that the course material no longer is current with the industry standards and do not cover up to date material.

I once heard they do after 10 years. 80 credits is way too many to let them expire. Please have him call the college ASAP.
