Empire. That's surely the first word.
My first thoughts are that our nation has many great things; the Constitution, the rule of law, the Declaration of Independence, but the current leaders are wrecking everything our founders stood and fought for.
They believed in Checks and Balances as well as Sectionalism/States and Local Government Rights, because a Central Federal Government is dangerous. But through one party control of all three branches and most of the state governments, their worst fears are being realized.
If something doesn't change soon, the next answer to this question could be "Fascist Dictatorship".

Truthfully... which one north or south. Then I realized you were talking about the USA. Yes I am from the United states too. I don't know why I thought that. Everyone else seemed to catch on! :) But first thought when I hear the United States. Safety. I am so thankful that I don't have to worry about the things so many other people do. Like being blown up on a daily basis.

Patriot act removing the rights of the people, and the people doing little about it, president with hidden agendas, imperial wars, allowing corporations to sell products made by sweatshop labor in other lands, the assassination of MLK and lies about what happened on 911.

Freedom, definitely. We have the rights to do a hell of a lot more here, including talking poorly about our government, than people in a lot of other countries do.

My first thoughts are 'Freedom'.. the freedom to agree. and the freedom to disagree.. the freedom to argue with our elected officials without fear of reprisal.. the freedom to protest that with which we disagree and the freedom to accept others who also wish to enhance that freedom..legally.
