I once had a friend who died of leukemia. She planned her funeral in advance and on her head stone she had those words engraved. I think about it sometimes why that song?

Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

because she knew she was dying and her stairway was on the whispering wind.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving

she suffered before she died and her spirit cried to leave.

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

she died and she doesnt suffer anymore a new day dawned.

I think it's about a lady who's dying and "buying a stairway to Heaven." But that really only makes sense for the first verse. I think this lady is figuratively trying to oppress society and trying to find peace by imagining a heaven for herself. However, it does say how "words are misleading", and she could be heading for a downward spiral due to the rest of the drug-induced society—which is probably represented by the "smoke through the trees."
Then that really hard rock ending implies that this happens so many times —"everyone goes down the road.," I think it says.

this is just what I think, not what I know is true.

The true meaning of stairway to heaven refers to the hardships experienced by the average sardine fisherman. He must arise early, get to his boat regardless of the weather, fight the raging seas, and bring in his precious catch of sardines. This must be done through the harshest storms, the hottest days, constantly fighting the seas and the weather. You must read between the lines to understand this, and have a keen sense of allegory, metaphor, and similies, but if you are very good with English you will be able to understand this.

Bucky-we don't need 10 minute songs anymore-everything is on hard drive & most radio stations are voice tracked anyway, and you hardly need a live body at all anymore.

But I like your answer :-)

It means the radio station DJ either has to take a dump or smoke a cigarette.

Bustled hedgerows.... Simple as that!

If my hedgerow got bustled, I'd write a song about it too!
