I closed my bank account over 12 months ago. I made sure that I payed the bank's fees ect and then collected my pay before closing this account. Last week, this bank contacted me and demanded that I pay them 700$! They say that the money I withdrew (whenI closed the account), which was MY pay, was actually their money. I am now being asked to pay this huge amount (they gave me 24hrs to pay)-eve though I have not heard from this bank in over 12 months. Can theydo this to me? I had no loans, overdrafts or credit cards, so I can't work out how they think that I owe them even one cent! Please help me-I am in a panic over having to pay a debt that was not my making??

Go to your bank in person, sit down with someone in management, stay calm, and let them explain it to you.
Chances are, if fees were charged, it was all a part of your contract you signed when you opened the account and it is correct. Ask them if they can work with you on the fees to see if they can lower the figure to a more reasonable number so you can afford to pay it.

If you withdrew you pay, the account wasn't closed. There may have been outstanding checks that were presented for payment after you thought you closed your account. Go into the bank and talk to the manager, maybe something can be worked out. Ask to see a history of your account showing where you went into the negative.

You should probaly talk to them. It may be your mistake or the bank's error. Call the customer service & talk to them. Keep in mind that if you don't clear this up, your name and personal info gets put on a black list to all BANKS. You won't be able to open a bank account anywhere for like 3-5 years until this debt has paid off or cleared. This will be horrible, cuz' you won't be able to use checks to pay for bills & etc.

Go there and ask them to prove it. Take your bank records with you but don't give them up. Either you will see your mistake or they will see theirs. People make mistakes all the time, even the people at NASA.

I just settled a bill with my cell phone company; $60 in errant charges were wiped out just by talking with them. Simple mistakes, that was all!
