Well in the UK they stick up two fingers, it's called giving the V (the opposite of the peace sign) I heard a story that it originated during the French/English 100 year war. Apparently the English used to kidnap the French bow men and cut off two of their fingers so they couldn't fire the bow and arrow, then they would send the men back over to the French army, and the English would stick their fingers up at them probably saying "Na Na Na Na Na u don't have ur fingers", lol. Who knows if it is true but if it is odds are giving the finger evolved from that :-).

According to the Heaven's Gate cult and the press release they sent out before their "journey";
In the year 7523 B.C. Robots invented humans to gather raw materials for their war effort against their evil intergalactic enemies, the Blabacons. After humans had suffered a thousand tortuous years as slaves, a young Neanderthal known as Bird Man (on account of his big nose) lead his people in revolution. Bird Man discovered that if he placed his middle finger in a Robot's exhaust port, it would fill up with gas and pop like a balloon. He taught a small band of like-minded Neanderthals this tactic. They immediately mounted another revolt, and they were successful until they ran into some unexpected trouble with a group of their own people, whom they called the House Neanderthals. In a small skirmish with this highly trained, heavily funded unit, Bird Man was killed. Using his father's death as a battle cry, Bird Man's son took up the mantle of the revolution. With this gesture he led his fellow Neanderthals to victory over the Robot horde. We unknowingly honor our savior every time we flip...the bird

Brits.
Legend has it it date back to the days of the middle ages. Englishmen were known for their skill with a longbow. In war, the enemy would chop off a archer's trigger finger. As a sign of defiance, archer's would give the"finger" to show the bad guys "screw you, I still have a good middle one."
It's kinda stuck ever since.
