It's a well proven and documented fact that people are influenced by what they see and hear in the media and in particular by watching TV. There is no denying that people emulate what they see on TV but it's not good for the TV and media industry as a whole to admit to this so they continue to deny it despite overwhelming and conclusive evidence to the contrary.
Don't forget that the tobacco industry adamantly refused to accept that smoking was harmful until about 7 years ago and the same is true of the entertainment industry today.
More and more people were suing the tobacco industry claiming that they had been led to believe smoking was harmless and it was only when potential future losses from law-suits were seen as more financially damaging than admitting that smoking was harmful that the tobacco industry held it's hands up.
This is a similar situation to ones we've seen in the alcohol, petro-chemical and pharmaceutical industries where it's been more profitable to deny the truth than to own up to the facts.
The entertainment industry makes big bucks from films, music and programs that portray violence and glorify crime. Whilst the money continues to roll in they'll continue to deny the media has a negative effect. It's only when they face financial losses (perhaps as a result of future law-suits) that they'll admit the facts and maybe attempt to limit damage by issuing the equivalent of health warnings with their products.
Until such times, and even after such times, impressionable people will be influenced by the media and as you quite rightly said - advertising is a perfect example of this. Most people are blissfully unaware of just how influential advertising is or that it adds about $40 to the family's weekly shopping bill.

It is what they call supply and demand. There are limited slots for commercials and if a show brings in large number of viewers then the chances of at least 1/2 of them buying your product is great. So you spend the $$. It's called subliminal message. Just think of a cleaning product and what do you think of? Your local brand or that strong bald guy?

If citizens follow their duty as citizens and raise their kids to be good citizens, it shouldn't matter at all what they see. What does sheltering children do, leaves them vulnerable and under prepared
for the truth of the world.

There's a difference between someones thinking patterns being altered by the media (untrue) and seeing something and thinking "Oooh, I want that!"

It does, you just have to be smart enough to overlook it (and teach your kids the same).
