I have a young rooster who is not growing as fast as the hens he hatched with. Why is this?

There are several possibiities:

1. He might be a different breed from the others, or have different genetics. This is especcially the case if the eggs came from a mixed-breed flock where the chicks are cross-breeds.

2. If you ordered a batch of chicks all the same breed and got a "free exotic chick" as a bonus (Murray McMurray Hatchery does this) he might be it. Again, a different breed.

3. He might be a runt. It happens with chickens the same as other animals.

4. He might be low on the pecking order and not getting as much food as the others. Watch the behavior of your flock and see who eats first. Make sure there is plenty of food so he gets enough when the dominant birds finish.

5. Some individual birds just mature slower. Also, in some breeds, the rooster doesn't show his full potential until he is a year old. So be patient!

It's not the size of the c*ck that matters. It's how strong the crow in the morning is.

Are you certain that he is the same breed as the pullets? He could be a bantam.
