A good way to get an answer would be to go to the dental clinic you wish to work and ask them this question. Also, the questions you ask for DH make it sound like it's not that important of a career for you, maybe you need to look elsewhere. And it also means you have nothing to lose if you try.

Talk to some independent doctors. Try some who have been in the business for awhile. Maybe they would let you work in their office to reduce the work load. Put in a few resumes. I would not think it would be hard to find a job fresh out of school. Also try some of the state agency's they probably need more doctors in some of the larger cities. You may have to take a small cut in salary for awhile until you build up your name. Once everything is running smoothly you should be able to work independently.

In Ohio, you can get wage and occupational outlook from http://lmi.state.oh.us/proj/SocOccCodes.htm. I ran a fast search on dental assistant (they make about $14 an hour here), and you can search different related occupations and get national reports.
