Most individuals don't have Yahoo Instant Messenger Profiles.
Well I have a profile on Yahoo 360 but I don't have a profile on Yahoo Messenger. If you click my profile on yahoo messenger It wont show you anything but my email address that I gave messenger to use. Some people do have a Instant Messenger profile.
With Yahoo Instant Messenger you can set your settings to show your Yahoo 360 profile. Right click the mouse on a persons profile that you want to view, if they have yahoo 360, it will show. Click on it. Then you can view that persons profile.
When you add individuals on your Yahoo 360 friends list, it also allows you to add them to your Instant Messenger list. Then you can view profiles when ever you like.

right click their name and click on profile. but you can't see the profile if they have a yahoo 360 account

You are only supposed to see the "public" profile that the user wishes to be shown. You're not supposed to see his/her personal information.
