shomechely is absolutely right, but I think it still says something about how voters felt about Ashcroft that he lost to a woman who hadn't previously held a govenment office that I know of.

First of all, Ashcroft lost to Mel Carnahan who died too close to the election to have the ballots amended. The governor, Bob Holden and Jean Carnahan - Mel's widow - immediately began a well publicized media campaign stating that if Carnahan were elected (and he was a pretty popular guy) his wife, Jean would be appointed by the governor to replace him. A vote for poor dead Mel was essentially a vote for Jean, the "grieving" widow who also lost her son in the same crash that killed her husband.
So, to set the record straight. John Ashcroft did not lose to a dead guy - he lost to the dead guy's wife.
