what do these mean really ? I am in Japan and one of the problems seems to be that overseas phones can't be used here unless they are under global roaming .

Well Quad band and Tri-band are reffering to GSM..
As for CDMA.. Its an old technology..
But.. CDMA Japan is very advance technology!! Highly advance Technology..
No country use it.. Just Japan!!

cdma is a frequency that some providers use, i believe works at 1800 Mhz. Quadband and triband phones just show how many frequencies the phones can use be used at, 4 and 3 respectively. In japan the networks us 3G so you need a 3G phone to be used there.

As for roaming it depends on your carrier and the agreements they have made with the company in the country of use.
