cdma is a frequency that some providers use, i believe works at 1800 Mhz. Quadband and triband phones just show how many frequencies the phones can use be used at, 4 and 3 respectively. In japan the networks us 3G so you need a 3G phone to be used there.

CDMA= Code Divisional multiple access, is the network the sprint and Verizon use. At&t wireless used to use a TDMA network which is comprable. GSM is the current network used by Cingular, T-Mobile. GSM phones in the US use the frequeiences of 850mhz and 1900mhz, international frequiences are considered 900mhz and 1800mhz. When you buy a quad band phone it will carry all theses frequeinces. A tri-band phone purchased in the US will typically carry one of those international frequiences depending on the manufactuer. International purchased tri-band will carry both international freqs. and usually 850mhz. Japan has an advanced network that is not backwards compatiable with our technology, Cingular is has just begun deploying that network in a couple choice cities. As for roaming it depends on your carrier and the agreements they have made with the company in the country of use. Woohoo, I'm glad I don't work for Cingular anymore! :) Check out there website it will explain it exactly, good luck!

To make it much less technical and much less complicated this is an common breakdown. CDMA (verizon, sprint, alltell) have their telephones with integrated sim enjoying cards meaning which you're caught with the telephone and the provider a brilliant sort of the time. In different words in case you have a verizon telephone it won't artwork with sprint or alltell (exception to this rule is a few blackberry telephones) and vice versa. GSM (att & tmobile) have their telephones which you will change sim enjoying cards from one provider to a different by ability of retaining one telephone. specific the telephones offered by ability of those providers are locked yet you may get those telephones unlocked. yet another sturdy factor is GSM is used worldwide and cdma isnt specifically in basic terms 8 countries use cdma because of its rural coverage is extra useful while in comparison with gsm. while you're gong to commute around worldwide on corporation journeys or customary very own journeys i recommend purchase an unlocked GSM telephone this is a quadband and you ought to use any sim card pay as you go or positioned up paid in the worldwide with your GSM quad band telephone. comparable luxurious can not be finished in cdma telephones. wish this grew to become into uncomplicated and common to understand and helped you
