The problem is that there are a number of major factors coming together to determine the American attitude towards Israel. And the factors are changing in weighted value on a yearly basis. America wants a strategic, stabilizing foothold in the ME. Partly for oil, and partly for national security. After WWII, there was the obvious moral reason of righting a wrong, and giving unjustly-treated people a home. Strangely, the Christian right has become a big supporter, recently. But then those people never do anything that makes sense. Americans also simply identify with the Israeli culture more than the Arab culture. Also, Israel is an investment for America. We've poured money into that scrappy little country for decades. And let's not forget, they've got the bomb. The big problem in my eyes is their insistance on occupying and colonizing Palastinian lands for so long with out much of a leg to stand on. It's a great question, and has left me baffled. Why do we continue to support them? And why support someone who chooses to live in a hornet's nest? If the Jews really want to live happily in their own land, why couldn't we have found them a less antagonistic corner of the world? It seems to me, the Israelis love to fight.
BTW, this pledge by Hamas to destroy Israel was made five years ago, before the election, and yet the press portrays the comment as if it were just made.

Because no division of the states in the Middle East will solve the problems as long as there are independent agents acting on behalf of the government these who engage in on-going, protected war. Don't worry about the oil, we will be out of oil soon enough.

I think Israel are entitled to defend themselves from a state sponsored terrorist organisation.
Would you have the US stand idley by if Cuba started regularly shelling Miami?
What about if France started shelling the UK, do you think we would say, 'well, they are a misunderstood and victimised race, so lets just put up with it'
Live in the real world man, people have a right to live in peace, without the fear of some nutcase muslim shelling them from across another border.
