If you want to preserve the natural shape and structure of the shrub, don't just prune back the tips. Take the branches that are the longest and protrude the farthest, and cut them back to the base of the branch. You may need ratcheting pruners if the branches are really thick. In this way you will lower the overall height and spread of the plant without affecting its natural shape.

it depends on what you are wanting to do.... if you want to lower it you may need a saw (gas, electric, chainsaw). what i would do is cut it down with secateurs. hand shears can also be used if you whish to shape... they can be found in gas and electric too.
