(in terms of effect on all of our daily lives) invention of the 21st century? What will be the one invention that we can't live without?

The truth is.......it is already in development. Someone above me said the cellphone. It sounds simple......but cellphones we have now can't even compare to what is in development.

Soon.....our cellphone will be our Identification badge.....much like our driver's license is right now. It will be carried around with us always for security purposes more than just communication purposes. It will be our key to automated tellers. It will be our access for entrance into secure buildings. It will be our credit card. It will be our live. It will definitely be the invention no one can live without because access without it will be denied.

I guess I always knew that someday down the road I'd be forced to have a cell phone. Until then.....I still refuse to carry one. *holds her ground*

I think we will have "smart houses". Some versions of this already exist.
Everything will be controlled by computers in the home. From waking up to cooking our meals, etc. Whatever chores the house has, will be handled by computers. Perhaps we will not go to offices anymore. All can be done in the home.
What will our world be like then? Will we have more free time than now or will there be other issues that will make our daily lives even busier than now.
It should all be very interesting.

Teleporters. Forget gas shortages. Having cars will be like having motorcycles in the future. We don't have them because we need them, we have them because we like the way they make us feel. Once teleporters are invented polution will be decreased, family life will improve and you won't ever have to worry about road rage or vehicle accidents ever again.

Either that or the thing on Star Trek that created pretty much anything from nothing. Imagine an end to global hunger. That'd be nice.

It's difficult to answer this since we are only in the 6th year of the 21st century. Check back in 94 more years. If I were to guess what it might be, I would say it would probably be a cure for some disease.

Expensive coffee. :)

Think about it: we now pay a lot for something that used to be cheap (coffee) and we pay a little for what used to be free (water). That is a pretty amazing marketing invention, and since the caffeine in coffee is addictive, my money is that expensive coffee will be the one thing that we cannot live without.

However, the real answer is probably something that is not even close to coming to fruition yet, like transporters (the Star Trek kind).

May God bless and keep you.

It's really hard to answer, since we have 93+ more years to go. Who knows what will come about. Nanites that attack cancer cells? A car that runs on water? A grain that can be grown in mud (will help vs. hunger in Africa, perhaps)? Cure for paralysis?

It's hard to imagine someone who was alive in 1906 to know what the current computer can do. I believe it will be the same as us in the year 2106.

I nominate written language. Without it we would degenerate to savagry and extinction, unless it is reinvented.
