Oh Boy...here we go. Let me get out my raincoat because I am about to climb up on a soap box an make a STATEMENT. AN that statement is going to draw all the rotten vebtables that many of your replies have just laying around for statements like mine.
I have my own opinion of God. First let me state that I DO feel there is a higher power or awareness then us. I do feel that higher power created us. I also believe that this higher power created us in it's own image. However, this is where my opinion, an mainstream religions opinion part ways.
I DO NOT feel that he created us because he had a week of spare time on his hands, or he was lonely an needed to be adored. Everyday someone creates something. Regardless of what that something is, that something serves a PURPOSE. If we were created, or helped along from indigenious habitation of this planet from an outside source, the only purpose we could have served, was one of the FEW things which I do believe from the bible, an that would be to tend GOD's Garden, to Labour.
The bible states that he had the angels who served him. So we were NOT created for that purpose. He also knows everything that was, an will be so he didnt create us to discover anything new. So as you eliminate the other posibilities you come down to cheap labour.
This would also explain how man went from worrying about food to worrying about money to buy things besides food.
It would also explain how one of the oldest mummies found to date, would have a hybred grain in his stomach. A hybred which would have taken thousand of years to crossbreed using the methods then known to man, who had only just domesticated animals and plants for food stocks, in the last three of four HUNDRED years.
An there is ONE more thing which I believe that hasnt been edited out of the bible yet. The story of Noah an the ark. I believe that, but with one twist. There is NO WAY that a boat made in the method that the bible tells us, that was 40 cubits by whatever that could have held even a few animals let alone a fertile mating pair of ALL of the animals still present today, and FEED for all of them. The only way to do that would have been to have gene splices of all of them.
An one last thing, KINGSHIP. The whole idea of one family being better then any other because of bloodline would lead one to believe that SOMEONE had knowledge of dna, an all the other wonders of modern science before we stumbled upon them just recently.
An for those out there that constantly harp on the fact that the local church has ALL your answers. Go ask your local pastor these questions. Why if it was "The WORD of God" has the bible been edited so much over the course of history? An I am not talking translations, I am talking whole books of the bible. It kills me when fundies say they take the word of the bible literally, because ALL the words are NOT all there.
ASK him this. Who was Baal? an if our God was The ONLY God, why did he have to battle BAAL for the TITLE? Who was Lilith? An why was she cast aside when she said she would walk BESIDES Adam not BEHIND him? AN why it was so important to list the names of just about everyone that Adam an Eve begot? An why they were called The Tribes of Cain an The Tribes of Able?
Those were just a couple of the questions that used to get me kicked out of bible study as a kid. As I have grown older I have gone looking for those answers myself. an I think, in my humble opinion, that many that have replied to this post should too. Start at your church, then work your way back thru the HISTORY of the church, an peice together the answers like I am doing. An if you hit the wall of heresay at the church, dont stop because you are afraid of what a couple of people you see a couple of times a week are going to think of you. Find out for YOURSELF. Ok I am getting down off my soap box now. Feel free to throw what ever rotten veggies you have, I have a Lands End Raincoat.

hmmm a very tricky question and one im not totally sure what i think/believe myself but ill give it a stab. For one if there is a creator then i dont think that it is anyone religion describes, they throw away terms like omnipotent and omnipresent too readily with absolutly no basis. However the nature of the universe as we know it seems to dictate that it came from somewhere, even before the big bang several things had to be present to start it, like gravity and matter.. where did this come from? this leads strongly to a creator but can just as easily be explained as something we dont understand. My personal belief is that if there is a creator he/she/it lives in a different plane of existance, possibly more than one. These different planes or dimensions would explain a lot such as where gravity comes from, where thought comes from, where antimatter (a crucial point as antimatter doesnt seem to exist in our universe but scientifically has to exist) exists... maybe in these dimensions a god exists and allows (by accident or design) physics in our universe to operate. Consider gravity as an example... mass creates a force that pulls other mass towards it but where does this force come from? why is the mass not used up in the creation of this energy? If you consider the universe as one huge equation (which is basically the way we think of it) then it must balance to zero to exist... therefore there must be forces at work we dont know about to acomplish this... I believe the search for god should be a scientific one rather than a religious one and if there is a god i doubt he/she/it is even aware of our existance.. In this sense, we could all be gods in our own right, creating laws of existence in different dimensions without even realising. Noone really knows where thought comes from (the brain seeming to react to thought rather than control it) so i hypothosise that when we die and exist as only thought, we may finally realise where we came from and this may help us find the answers we sought in life... Of course this is all theoretical, theres no real way to prove or deny the existance of god but it does get the old grey matter working when your actually sit down and try to think about it, lol hope all that made some sort of sense.

YES - and all nature reflects the fact, with its insistence on LIVING. Mankind is in the privileged position of having a brain that can work out something more about this: if an animal has any concept of God, it is innate -- instinctual: "built into the hardware". But mankind recognizes something of free will. Ironically, "free will" is getting on without outside involvement (like God), but is actually a characteristic of God that he has given us as a sort of inheritance. Yes, mankind, like all life on earth, evolved, but evolved from GOD; limited and fragile though we are, we are actually made with the image nd attributes of God himself -- which can be seen primarily in our possession of free will.
I further believe that God sees that as a species we have filed badly, and has set forth a rescue plan that will bring us back into a right and naturl relationship with him. Red Romans chapter Ten to get a flavour of the argument.

I think there is a God when a person needs God enough. When people are in a lot a pain, dying, really afraid, they generally call out to God. So, I guess for people it could be a subjective thing
I guess you could ask a goldfish in its bowl to describe its keeper? I've had some spooky experiences that are far beyond coincidence, so i remain open minded

i have thought of this a lot and i have heard several theories that interest me perhaps we all humans together are God, and what is known as the 'collective unconscious' is responsible for creation as to whether your question can be answered i think the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy gives an intriguing answer god's existence relies on faith, so to prove his existence would mean faith is no longer needed because there is proof, the book gives the idea that to prove gods existence would cause him (or her) to cease existing it may taken to be a joke but it is relevant none the less

Well as I want you to know I'm not trying to compare the Lord to Santa Clause but I am trying to use a comparison mind you. OK anyway we all want to believe right? Its all spiritual, understand? Like whats in your heart. I choose to believe that there is a higher being because for one thing I don't want to think my existence ends here. I want to believe that I will go to heaven and be in peace when my life here is over. I want to believe that a greater being made this earth with all its beautiful wonders and mystical beauty, that he in fact did create man and woman. It gives us hope, a reason to get up and give thanks for the things we DO have instead of feeling bad for the things we DON'T have. Believing in Jesus is more spiritual and therefore only you can decide is eternity in Heaven and all that goes with it worth you believing in God. To me its a SMALL price to pay (you know being a good person) as opposed to being a bad person) to have everlasting life in heaven. But that's a decision you have to make.

God retired, he went on holiday for a while to catch up on his astrological sun tan. He comes back to visit, just for nostalgia ... and sometimes to laugh at us .
Yep God and all the other Gods worshipped around the world, have a get-to-gether to catch up on the latest news, and talk about the good old days of teaching the humans with flaming fireballs and raining frogs etc..... haaaa the good ole-days.....
When mortals where just mere and Gods were unquestionably superior and to be feared, respected and worshipped!.

The symbol that is God is all based on faith, whether you want to accept it or not. Those whose faiths are so strong are blinded by it and say that to them he does exist, eventhough the only proof they have is what they perceive to be true through their faith, something seen in philosophy as a circular argument, one to which there is no proof. In the end faith is a 50/50 concept, there's never proof for it or against it so to answer your question... i don't know, and no one does.

Yes, there is a God and He created you and loves you and wants you to recieve the gift of mercy and forgiveness for your sin. He also wants to be your Heavenly Father. Not to be pushy or anything, but reading the Bible would answer a lot of questions for you.

there is a God. look around you. look at all of creation. it is complex and intricately detailed. could it have been the result of a spontaneous big bang? certainly not. God is everywhere we turn. He is within people and within His Creation. Man has a part of him that craves to communicate with a Supreme Being and God is the only One that can fill that proper place. There definitely is more to life than just what we see.
