If it was Tales from the Darkside there was one back in the early 80's called Inside the closet.
There is a girl in college or prep school or something and a crazy looking creature lives in her closet. The thing looked like a hairless monkey or Gollum-like thing. It eventually kills the girl. Turns out it was the professors daughter.
Is that the one your talking about?

My favorite episode of Tale from the Darkside involved a teddy bear, and it was actually a stuff baby bear, and the very mean and monsterous and mad mommy bear came back for the baby bear .. killing the family of four who had it.
You're episode sounds familiar, but I can't remember the details.

i think that was an episode of beyond belief: fact or fiction with your host jonathan 'commander riker' frakes which was based on a true story
