Just want to say for one - rats are not stupid. Don't knock it till you've tried it. They can be just as sweet and intelligent as dogs, and I really miss mine. :( Dwarf hamsters tend to be a bit more nippy than the regular sized ones, and from my experience the Russians are the most nippy. Not that they are ALL nippy, they can be very sweet if they have been handled since a young age. But I would suggest going with a winter white, they have beautiful coloring and will hopefully be a little more friendly. If you have never owned a hamster before, I'll just let you know that it will take around two weeks for her to get used to being held. So don't get discouraged too quickly. Hold her or leave your hand in her cage for a few minutes every day, wash your hands before doing this, and let her get used to your smell. She'll get used to you even quicker if you always give her a treat when you do this. She'll see you coming as a good thing, and be more will to be picked up. Also, when you go to pick her up, try to scoop her up with both hands, don't grab at her from behind because it scares them and you're more likely to get bitten. As far as where you buy it, just go to the place where they seem to know their stuff, and the majority of their animals look healthy. try to avoid places that sell puppies because by buying their you are possibly donating to puppy mills. Most Petsmarts don't sell puppies, and usually take very good care of their animals. When you pick out one, get one that is curious, not terrified or lethargic. make sure there is no mucus around eyes and nose, and that it does not have wet tail. Don't buy a sick animal in an attempt to save it, because you will just be rewarding the people who don't take care of their animals. Oh- and Petsmarts usually have care guides on their animals for free, so you can pick up one that will just give you the basics of keeping your hamster healthy. XD

If your hamster is and adult and there is blood on the bottom is it coming from her butt or vaginal area which are very close together. I would thing that she was going threw a heat cycle.they tend to bleed for 3-5 days. If she is eating and playful and seems to be her self then give it a bit but if the bleeding is gotten worse or lasts for more than the time above then plz seek medical attention for her

Wet Tail, a bacterial disease common to hamsters, does cause this. Is she scruffy-looking? Has she had any wet diahhrea? It can be caused by any number of things, including stress, diet changes, too limited a confinement, extreme temperatures, or unsanitary conditions.

Regardless of the cause, get her to a vet as soon as possible! This is serious!

You need to get her to an emergency vet, she will prolapse and die pretty rapidly if you leave it. Sorry.
(she is NOT on her period, do you really think a hamster would lose more than a pinhead full of blood even if hamsters did have periods).

it could mean 1 of 2 things...1 is that she has reached sexual maturity...or...2 she has internal bleeding and needs to see a vet asap...
