You could make a good day out of it. Spend the daytime doing a fun activity together. Then during the afternoon give presents. Presents should be gift cards, or cash to spend as he pleases, gaming consoles/games, you could find out what his favorite band is and get concert tickets for it. In the evening go out to dinner.

When my oldest son got around that age i started giving him gift cards from his favorite stores so he could go pick out his own gift.

Instead of buying him something why don'y you take him out and spend some time with him. What is his favorite sports team take him to one of their games. He might like that better.
