All creative answers aside, it takes you directly to the top result for your search rather than taking you to the results, and you clicking on the top result.
It uses a formula that is based, at least partly, on the number of references to a page. So, the more websites that link to a page, the higher that page will rank for searches that relate to it.
My favorite example of this was in a newspaper article (that explained much better the technical process than I did) about it: put "weapons of mass destruction" in, and press the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, and you go to some guy's satire page about WMDs and George W. I haven't done it since I read the article, so I don't know if that search still goes where it used to, but it's pretty funny.
The best way to see what it does is to do a regular search, make note of the top result, and then do the exact search again, but use the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button. Who knows? You may find a new form of entertainment. You could count how many times it takes you to a raunchy page when you put in a non-sexual word or phrase.

When you enter your search term and click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, Google will take you directly to the site that is the first page returned for your query.

Instead of taking you to a page where a bunch of search results are listed, it will take you to the page it thinks is most relevant to your search.

I.e.: 1) Go go google.com and type in rice. It will come up with a list of pages containing the word rice

VS.

2) Go to google.com and type rice. Click I'm feeling LUCKY. It will take you to rice.edu-- a result it thinks you meant.

LOL to the person who mentioned typing in "failure." I'm suprised that takes you to whitehouse.gov. Yikes.

try typing anything in and then hit that button, it will take you to a site Google feels most closely matches your search. It is usually from websites that have paid google for the privilege

well the best way to find out is to click on it,
this is what it told me when I did.
"The "I'm Feeling LuckyTM" button automatically takes you to the first web page returned for your query.

An "I'm Feeling Lucky" search means less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them"

It will only give you one site to go to. If you want a laugh, go to Google, type in the word "failure" then hit the I feel lucky key.

it means you're pretty sure you'll be directed to the right site with the words you've typed into the search field. instead of being given a list of possible webpages you'll be taken directly to the most likely site.

shirley e - that's outrageous! thanks! LOL.
