I am fuzzy about what exactly a "material change" is defined as. I know that it can only pertain to the child not the parents themselves.

Actually, anything that would significantly affect how the children are raised could count as a material change.

So, re-marriage, or live-in relationship, or being fired from their job, or significant change in job responsibilities (amount of travel, hours, etc) could all count.

The bottom line is that the court always decides what is material and what is not, unless the custody decree (or mediate custody agreement) pre-specifies what is material. Even then, the court has the final say.
