It is not New York. People are indifferent, perhaps, but that's not rude. In fact, they can be very interesting.
The rudest people are probably in Los Angeles or Washington DC.
People in both places are interested in how you may further their career. In DC, the first question anyone seems to ask is "who do you work for?" The question is to determine whether there is any reason for them to talk to you. Answer with a politician's name and they will not leave you alone. LA is similar, in that everyone wants their break in show business, and they can be very cold if you have no connection to entertainment in anyway.
If I had to choose one over the other, I'd say Washington D.C. is worse.

Ballston Spa, New York. Several years ago, I was visiting this small town, and I entered a bar. Even though I was in my mid thirties, and obviously that age (grey at the temples, crinkles at the eyes), I was carded. I gave them my Virginia driver's license, and with a friendly smile told the barmaid that she had really made my day. I was then asked for a New York ID, which I didn't possess, so I was told to leave, and all of the bar patrons assumed a slightly more menacing posture. As I spent more time there, I ran into a lot of rude, nasty people, and I was really happy when my business there finished, and I was able to move on.

Why is people picking USA cities. They are mellow compaired to over seas.
Most any city in the Middle East has the rudest people. I have never seen such a mess of protesters who just want to kill someone in any other country but maybe France. The only Place in the middle east that I know of that don't act like a killer mob would have to be in Israel. I have never seen a protest there. And People seem to want to help each other. I think it would be a nice place to live. I think Jerusalem would be the nicest city.
I know you said rude.. But there are way too many that are just alike.. war war war.

The perception of a city as rude is really is more a reflection or projection of our own demeanor. We need to take the plank out of our own eye then we can remove the mote from our brothers'eye.
Yet, I here time after time from persons returning from Paris,France, how the french were rude to them and how they were shafted in some manner. So, there must be something going on there!

I think San Francisco has the rudest drivers. You can't drive anywhere without somebody honkin' at you. In general, people here are nice though, as long as the sun shines.
