My insurance changed and I have to chose a new PCM. My husband and I are thinking about starting a family, but I am not pregnant yet. Should I go with a family practice doctor or an obgyn. How would that affect my care in other areas

I know lots of women who choose OB/GYN as primary. It doesn't really affect insurance all that much. The only problem I find is that there are more postponing appointments because they got called to the hospital. A family practitioner will usually be there because that's what he does. I've thought about the same thing but hate to have appointments booked 6 months in advanced and they're cancelled the last minute. Just something to think about. Also, if you have a sore throat or don't feel good - I feel like I would be wasting a specialists time when a general pracitioner would be more available.

You'd have to ask your ob/gyn. Some specialists are not licensed to be a primary. If your ob isn't listed with the insurance co as a primary, the insurance won't accept primary billing from her/him.

I chose an Internist as my primary care provider.
