Or are they automatically done for you? In other games I've had to install the patches manually I was just wondering if this is neccessary for WoW. Thanks for any help.

The Patches are installed automatically. There will be some major ones so be ready to not be able to play for a while. You can take some time to decide what sort of character you want to play. If you are going to solo alot I suggest a hunter. If you want to be able to group whenever then try a priest

just log on, if you're not up-to-date WoW will download the patches and install them automatically. If its a patch release day, it might take a long time to download or even access the torrent file.

The first time you log in if you need any patches it will automatically download them and cause you to restart. But you shouldn't need to. Patches come out roughly once a month, but there is no schedule.
