When political candidates spend millions to try to get elected to a position that pays a few thousand, there's something desperately wrong.

If that was a serious question, you must be very naive.
Who can doubt the government's corruption?
The senators get multi million Dollar pensions, and Bush wants to rip the heart out of medicare? Not that it is all that hot to start with.
Force the crooks in the senate and the house onto social security, and you'll be shocked how fast they'll fix it, these stinking, thieving crooks!

Our system of government although initially intended to be of service to the people is extremely susceptible to abuse of power and corruption. A politician gets elected because he/she tells the people what they want to hear. Upon taking office, the first thing the politician does is to prepare for reelection. To do that he/she has to have money and more money. So he/she makes deals with lobbyist and other interest groups. He/she will go back to his state and tell the people what they want to hear. After reelection, its payback time to the lobbyists and us poor suckers are forgotten (temporarily) and don't see any of the things promised. The cycle repeats all over again.

Of course the government is corrupt. ALL governments are corrupt from the local town and city level all the way to the top...and it does not matter which country's government you are talking about, the leaders have been bought and paid for by special interests.

They may be corrupt, but I'd rather have them in charge than a bunch of lunatic muslims who are no better than Nazis. Wouldn't you? I think it's the lesser of two evils.

Probably somewhat corrupted, it’s inevitable. When power and money come together, corruption is their baggage handler.
And you can quote me on that.
