my comp will not defrag properly only gets to 2 percent then goes back to 0 what is wrong???

The other answers all offer good advice, but I'd just like to recommend this procedure:
1. Turn off System Restore. (click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, System Restore, and then click where it says "System Restore Settings", and put a check mark into the box that says "Turn off System Restore On All Drives".
2. Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as it is rebooting.
3. Run your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware programs in Safe Mode.
4. Run a CHKDSK /F from the command prompt
5. Now Defrag the hard drive while still in Safe Mode.
6. Reboot back into regular Windows.
7. If all works well, go back into System Restore and UN-Check the box you checked before.

make sure its the only program running. If its been a long time since you have done any user maint. to your computer then do following in order. clean disk-spyware scan-virus scan-check disk (ckddsk) then de-frag make sure only thing running will take a long time. don't move mouse just leave alone.

try running chkdisk. open my computer right click on hard drive, click properties, click tools tab, click check now under error checking , check both boxes. then it will run when you reboot.
