The person who was trying to answer this question is referring to social protest in terms of civil disobediance i.e. passive form of protesting (non-violent) or when the people band together to fight authority, major examples can be found from Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr. For further information look up civil disobediance by Henry David Thoreau. In these terms, from The Grapes of Wrath, highly religious and symbolic, I feel the term social protest refers to the uneasiness due to the zeitgeist. These can be seen throughout the entire book, from the beginning when there were more workers than jobs to the end especially when the workers riot. IT has been a while since I have read that dreary book though so I may be wrong.

A Social Protest focuses on the reciprocal relationships among social movements, states, and political parties. It is often risky and demanding strategy of using disruptive protest when other channels of political intervention appear to be available

Protesting about what is wrong in society. This doesn't mean going out and picketing. Protesting can be public (per the example I just gave you) or private (refusing to eat meat because you believe it's wrong.)
