I’ve seen a lot of questions about great guitarists asked in this category, so I arranged a little battle between the greatest guitarists of all time. I’ve carefully cross-referenced many lists on the web to get the greatest bunch of guitarists. I judged the guitarists by the speed and quality of their playing and how influential the guitarist was. If you don’t recognize one of the guitarists, please opt out of that battle to make the judging fair or listen to the performance I suggested.
Here’s the link to the bracket:

Click on “Game Details” for the band the guitarists were most well know for playing in as well as a notable performance by the guitarists.

Ritchie Blackmore vs Joe Satriani
Steve Vai vs Eric Clapton

Hendrix: He was revolutionary.

Satriani: Blackmore was an awesome hard rock/early metal guiarist but Satch is more unique and has such a great understanding of melody.

Clapton: Vai has fast fingers Clapton beats writes better songs (not just lyrics but the music as well).

Gilmour: He can make his guitar sing!

Santana: He can make is guitar sing too!

??? Don't know enough about Gilbert or Buckethead

Frusciante - again I just love the guys who understand melody.

???Don't know who Becker is so I cant' say.

Jimmy Page - They both wrote tons of classic rock riffs but Page is an all around better player. You have to give Young credit for doing so much with power chords though.

???Don't know Batio

Petrucci-only heard his stuff a few times but Chuck milked one GREAT riff over and over and over...

Van Halen...tough call but he was a revolutionary.

Malmsteen vs. Townsend I just can't say.

Eric Johnson if for no other reason than you just reminded me to dowload Cliffs of Dover!!!

???Don't know Holdsworth

Can't make a call on this last one either.

The doors - the top Iron Butterfly- Ina Gadda Da Vida Yep, i'm biased ~ i'm no longer partial to the two yet it is likewise tempting to p.c.. 'inn California' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', as i do no longer fairly like the two of those... shouldn't the pink Floyd music be 'Echoes'...?
