You could try clicking on the sound icon with a right single click or a left double click. Sometimes the sound gauges seem to move around for no apparent reason. The top gauges should be in the centre and the volume buttons near the top.

You could turn your computer off and make sure you have the speakers plugged into your computer in the correct outlet and not an extra mouse or keyboard outlet.

There can be as many reasons as "why do I have mold in my bathroom"....
Start with the obvious: Did the guy you bought the computer from leave his sound card in the computer, or did he take it out?
Next: When you plug-and-unplug the power supply of the speakers, do you hear a "click", and when they are on and at full volume, do you hear a shshshshs (white noise)? If yes, your speakers and power supply are at least OK.
Beyond that, I would suggest to consult a computer hardware geek.

Your receiver has a small change interior the headphone jack that shuts the main important audio equipment off while headphones are plugged in. the computing gadget does not have that change. you could desire to instruct the potential off on the main important audio equipment to get them silent then use the headphones.
