Returning to college after marriage and kids. I'm a commuter so I'll only be hiking around campus from my car and other classes. I also have a laptop. Pretty big one. But I won't be carrying it everyday. Also, I don't want to spend a whole lot.

I never used a backpack, just carry the books, its not worth having one, eventually you will just leave it in your car and carry books.

Leave the laptop at home if you can. As for backpacks, most commuter students I know have used a high quality backpack that can last them the duration of their education. I bought a nice one from Eddie Bauer in my sr yr of HS, and it's still in good shape.
Avoid bringing the books unless A) you ABSOLUTELY need them for class or B) PROMISE YOURSELF to do the reading at school.

I would say get one that is used mainly for "sports" as those are very durable and can hold a lot of weight. Also--they are the most comfortable. For me personally, I would buy a more expensive one that can last for years than buy a cheap one that only lasts a few months then has to be replaced.

You might like a messenger bag.

There's a lot of different styles and sizes, but they typically are slung over one shoulder. Occasionally called "sling bags" too for that reason.

We've had the best luck with Jansport. They're really rugged, built to last.
