Here is a situation that has happened to me today. Although I already know what I am going to do, I thought I'd share it here, for the fun of reading others' opinions and giving them some points.
You have ordered $50.00 worth of merchandise from a catalog, plus you've selected a free gift awarded to anyone who orders $50 or more. After weeks of waiting, Mr. Postman delivers your package... but to your surprise, there are TWO packages! They both contain the exact same items. You know you were not charged twice, because you had paid with a money order. If you send the second package back, you will have to pay for the shipping out of your own pocket money. What DO you do?

Communicate: Contact the merchant, explain the situation and let them pay for shipping so you don't get dinged for your honesty. Sometimes they'll say, "Oh just keep it." If they do, you can keep it in good conscience.

Many companies will pay to even have a defective product picked up if it was DOA or not to the buyer's satisfaction. But more directly, I guess it depends on what type of item it is. I'd hate to exploit, say, an eBay seller who made an honest mistake. Also, my own inclination would be not to keep anything remotely connected with the religious or spiritual. Ultimately, if you can think of someone who can truly benefit from the item, that would probably accrue more merit (where it "counts") than sending it back. If it's a large company, the loss can be assumed to be minimal and the object put to good use personally or by giving it to someone else. My opinion.

I would send the package back. After all, you don't need two of, say, the exact same shirt in the exact same colour in the exact same size.
So, I would send it back, and hope they would pay me back for being such an upstanding sort. And if they didn't, oh well. This is Karma.

Call the mail order place and let them send you a pre paid label

Call the company that shipped it to me. It's their error; shipping is their responsibility.

Inform the shipper that they made a mistake and await a response. S&H on their mistake is not your resposibility.
